What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal Decompression is an alternative to disc surgery:

There has been much information in the media recently about the merits of spinal decompression.  In order to appreciate the merits of this new technology, you must first understand the condition it treats.

The common condition treated with Spinal Decompression include; intervertebral disc protrusion, hernia, disc rupture, disc prolapse, disc bulging as well as disc degernataion and dehydration/desiccation.

Also, other treated conditions may include spinal stenosis, facet syndromes, radiating pain, numbness, and tingling legs-feet-toes and/or arms-hands-fingers.  Many nerve entrapment conditions respond well to Spinal Decompression including sciatica, neuropathy and radiculopathy.

Spinal decompression works by relieving pressure on each disc, to reduce the pressure and pain associated with compressed discs. When a disc is compressed, the disc material moves from its place between each disk, into the space occupied by the sensitive nerves. When the nerves become crowded, the patient experiences great pain and pressure. This pain is not alleviated by even the strongest of pain medications. Many times, the condition warrants the use of highly addictive medications, such as morphine to mask the pain long enough to give the patient some relief. Long term however, the risk for addiction increases, while the source of the pain is untreated.

Surgery attempts to treat the condition by cutting off  part of the disc to create room for the material that is crowding the nerves. Spinal decompression eliminates the source of the pain, therefore eliminating the need for risky spine surgery and the subsequent months of down time post surgery.

After taking your history and completing an orthopedic and neurologic exam Dr. Loechinger will review your x-rays and MRI.  If you are a candidate for this non-invasive procedure we will tell you so and begin treatment.   If Spinal Decompression is not warranted for your condition we will tell you that also and explain other treatment options even if does include medications and surgery...we are here to help you no matter what it takes.

Hopefully Spinal Decompression will be your non-surgical answer.  For more information see "Disc Decompression Therapy".
